UNDERSTANDING THE IMPORTANCE OF DEMENTIA SIGNAGE

Dementia Signage for Day Centres and Care Homes

As well as raising awareness about dementia, we at Taylor & Pickles are trying to raise awareness of the range of specialist dementia signage that is available.

Taylor & Pickles have worked with a number of Care Home operators to implement fresh, clear signage around their sites. This has given us an in depth knowledge as to what is required when creating dementia specialist signage.

The University of Stirling research states, “The care environment can be made more supportive and enabling with quite simple additions. The first is to make sure that what is important is highly visible.

We fully understand the need for discretion and sensitivity during a signage installation.

As you can see in the picture to the left, the image on the dementia sign, can be changed should the lounge ever have a makeover. All you have to do is take a new picture, print it off and replace the old one. This provides a strong visual cue that Residents can relate to.  This type of sign also works in care homes with residents having a picture that they can relate to, especially bedrooms, for example:

  • Their favourite pastime.
  • Memorable times, places or people
  • Their name
  • Their room itself

With changeable pictures you can tailor your signs to your resident’s individual needs. The interchangeable element allows the good practices of life history to be integrated in to the environment.

Clever use of signage can benefit those with declining cognitive ability. It helps them make the right decisions and enables them to feel informed and aware of where they are.

Taylor & Pickles understand that the primary focus needs to be informative if the individual with dementia is really to benefit.

We Understand

your residents requirements

Dementia Signage for Day Centres and Care Homes.

Taylor and Pickles design and manufacture bespoke signage for care homes, day care centres, hospitals, sheltered accommodation & many other buildings.

Our manufacturing facility is based in Preston, Lancashire working along side our sister company Electropak Ltd  enables our signs to be tailored to our customer’s requirements.

We work closely with care homes to understand the needs and requirements of the residents and visitors. Ensuring good signage is in place helps towards maximising residents independence, it also helps to relieve stress and anxiety.

Why is Dementia Signage Important?

Disorientation and bewilderment can be a common experience for those with dementia, this can become very frightening and distressing for the person. Many people with dementia often move to a special live in housing unit or care home, the adjustment to the new environment can be extremely difficult to adjust due to the needs of the memory and learning. Clear signage is there to help everyone feel and home and help adapt to their surroundings.

The first thing is to make sure that what is important is highly visible… This is again where signage plays an important part. You or I may take for advantage walking out of our rooms and being able to close the door and remember our way back to the same room. Some people who suffer dementia often cannot find their own rooms without seeing the content or something that will remind them that they are in the right place. Our signage systems can be changed to help the individual. For example we have picture changing dementia signage that allows a picture to be inserted into the sign, this could be the inside of the bedroom, or a chocolate bar they love.  These simple steps can dramatically help the resident feel confident and aware in their home.
